Job Summary

The Data Governance Manager is a pivotal role in defining the Elementis has an aligned Data Governance strategy and framework, and ensuring that such framework is operationalized. This is crucial to ensuring “one version of the truth”, which is fundamental for better decision making and more efficient data operations that support Elementis to deliver its overall strategy. The role is also key to execute this strategy, acting as a leader and role model to drive enhanced data capability and data driven decision making across the organization. The role influences the internal business teams on data governance and management and leads the external 3rd parties supporting data governance management.

Department: Data & Digital (within the Finance and IT team)

Responsibilities

 1.      You develop and own the data governance strategy & frameworks and then work closely with the Business Data Owners (i.e. leaders in different business functions) to develop and implement detailed data governance.

2.      You ensure Elementis has integrated and comprehensive external data policies and compliance procedures and work closely with the Data Business Data Owners to develop the data quality standards and processes.

3.      You evaluate and implement fit for Elementis data governance and management technologies to optimize data processes, collaborating with the IT teams and 3rd parties vendors to integrate data solutions and ensure seamless operations.

4.      You lead Data Governance and Management, overseeing governance and integrity activities done by Elementis Data Owners and Stewards; and the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to inform decision making– whether done by a 3rd party or in-house.

5.      You oversee Elementis efforts regarding data capability development, data management tools and processes adoption.

6.      You support the development of a multi-year data roadmap, ensuring that data governance and management activities and process improvements are considered.

7.      You conduct data and digital assurance and audit work.

8.      You foster a culture of a single Elementis approach and data driven decision making.

Decision making

You have the authority to make decisions related to data governance strategy and frameworks including the technical tools to be used, data management approaches, data governance framework, data policies, compliance, data capability development etc.

You can also make decisions related to the execution of governance and management aspects of the Data transformation project, including timelines, milestones and resource allocation within data budget.

Strategic mindset: Having a strategic mindset allows you to set clear direction and vision for data governance strategies for Elements and identify market trends and opportunities that drive forward a data governance strategy and a framework.

Influences and communicates effectively: Effective communication enables you to articulate complex strategic data goals and provide governance guidance at a level that is understandable to a non-technical audience. This is crucial to ensure everyone is aligned with the data governance objectives, understands the benefits to the company and can share ideas and feedback openly.

The ability to move from strategy to detail is a core competence in this area as frameworks & policies require a high-level view, but their implementation and resolving daily operational problems needs attention to detail.

Plan and align: Planning and aligning to execute is essential for implementing the data governance strategy effectively. It enables you to communicate to the business when, and for how long, their resources are needed, ensure data governance activities are synchronized with project timelines, and achieve the desired outcomes.  

Understanding the business to develop a strategy and framework that best fits the Elementis needs is core to the role; it also enables you to implement the data governance and framework more easily. You demonstrate the ability to work across organisational boundaries and geographies.

Optimized work processes: Knowing the most effective and efficient processes within data technical management is key to help oversee the data governance and management activities and spot opportunities for optimization, with a focus on continuous improvement.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven experience in driving successful data transformation and developing and implementing data governance strategies and frameworks.
  • Advanced in-depth knowledge of data management, analytics, and tools.
  • Excellence communication and collaboration skills – ability to talk “Data technical matters” to non-specialists.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in information technology, data science, data management or related fields. Master’s degree is a bonus.

Experience: 5+ years of experience in a data governance or data manager role or a combination of the two.

IT Skills: Proficiency in MS365. Advanced knowledge of the CluedIn master data management tool. Understanding and knowledge of PowerBI.

Language Skills: Verbal and written fluency in English and Portuguese, other European languages are a plus.

Working arrangements: Minimum 3 days in the Porto office  as per the hybrid working policy

Traveling required: The role will be required to travel as per the needs of the business and where necessary to interact in person with leaders of the business
